Spartan Blog updates galore!

A massive stream of stuff has come from those lovely chaps over at Spartan Games. They have given a preview of some of the goodness that is to come from Studio Sparta for Dystopian Legions! Feast your eyes…

Colonel Samuel H. MacDonald

Yes, the Britannians can be lead by an old guy in a Steam powered Wheelchair and indeed, why not?

The world of Dystopian Wars appears to be a very inclusive one, Wheelchairs and prosthetics are clearly an advantage in the officer classes!

Germanic, steam powered, Mini-gun equipped, terminators FTW!

This man has yet to earn his prosthesis

Tesla Bayonettes. Win

Yankees!

More Yankees!

Yankee Officer!

I like them, but the guns seem a little small, un-American to utilize a stereotype.

Kingdom of Britannia Knights Templar

For England, Harry and St. George! Knight Templar = Yum!

Empire of the Blazing Sun Ryuma Steambike

Very possibly my favourite of the bunch. Samarai Steambike! Sounds like an ’80s cartoon!

Check out the spartan blog for more information on all of those as well as this…

The Fresnel Class Support Cruiser is a new and terrible weapon that has only recently been encountered amongst the fleets of the Frozen South.

The warship is, in most respects of a conventional design, if you can ever call a ship of the Covenant Ghost Fleet in any way conventional. However, the rather considerable exception to this is the energy weapon mounted atop the its spine.

Fresnel Class Support Cruiser

Fresnel Class Support Cruiser

From what can been gathered from photographic aeroplanes, this weapon is far more than a mere up-scaled energy weapon. Upon closer inspection one will see that the objects along the broadsides are not the unusual gun-spheres, but some kind of strange electrical apparatus. Likewise, the great turret atop the ship is not as it appears, whilst it has clearly been seen firing beams of radiant energy, it is not an energy turret, but a great, articulated assembly of lenses.

Fresnel Class Support Cruiser

The only rational conclusion that can be drawn with these facts is that the Fresnel is nothing less than a water-borne focusing array for Covenant Energy Weapons. The beams fired from other vessels entering the ship by its sides, before being focused, refined and amplified into a single attack, far more powerful than the sum of its parts.

Annonnax Class Submersible

Annonnax Class Submersible

The Annonnax is without any doubt one of the strangest, most inconceivable and technologically advanced machines yet seen to come out of the Covenant of Antarctica.

Annonnax Class Submersible

The fighting machine’s existence has only been confirmed in the past few weeks, with multiple sightings of its use in combat along the northern cost, however for several months now there has been reports of weapons shipments coming under fatal attack from supposed ‘sea monsters’.

Annonnax Class Submersible

From the information that has been gathered, and from ample speculation by the scientific community, the following has been established. The Annonnax is a submersible, yet able to come aground and move like a writhing snake – making it equally at home travelling overground or underwater.

Annonnax Class Submersible

Although details are still uncertain, it appears that the great machine strikes at its prey – be it a warship or a tank – by ramming it and attacking with its great mechanical maw.

Annonnax Class Submersible

It also appears to have some kind of powerful energy weapon, although any exact details of this are unknown at this time, as regrettably, no one who has yet encountered the weapon at close range has survived to report back.

Spartan Games have announced the release of their new edition rulebook full of the up to date rules and hopefully making better sense than the current edition! This is from the Spartan blog…

Since launching in October 2010, Dystopian Wars has gone from strength to strength as more and more gamers jump on board and discover the technological marvels of a Victorian Sci-Fi Age. As Dystopian Wars evolved, we continued to make improvements to our popular game. That natural progression has led us to the new Dystopian Wars Edition 1.1 Master Rulebook.

This edition, which will be shipping from Monday 27th February, brings together a number of key changes to the rules system, a refinement of the rules text and tweaks to the Stat Cards of certain models, all of which enhance the game and deliver a better tournament experience. Rules for the original four nations are presented clearly and concisely, backed up with some beautiful illustrations of the characters and ships that bring the world of Dystopian Wars to life. Of course, the Edition 1.1 Master Rulebook is still fully compatible with the Covenant of Antarctica and the new Republique of France A5 Fleet Guides.

We are very excited about the improvements to the highly-anticipated Edition 1.1 Master Rulebook. To celebrate the launch of the Edition 1.1 Rulebook, we’re delighted to bring you TWO very special offers.

A bit late…

I’m a bit late on the uptake this time for Spartan Games renders but I thought I would show them anyway, since you might not have seen them yet and they prove once and for all just how mad these guys at Spartan are…

Covenant of Antarctica - Herodotus Class Mobile Airfield

Covenant of Antarctica – Herodotus Class Mobile Airfield

“But where’s the runway?” I hear you cry. Well stop it! You should know by now that The Covenant Of Antarctica does not use anything so old fashioned as runways. They fire their automated drone planes into the sky like some kind of smart missile.

This spider-esque beast is pretty mad in and of itself but its nothing compared to the madness of the Prussian Mobile Airfield:

Words cannot describe. Its just pure unadulterated madness. I love it, it makes me want a second fleet, and i cannot afford another fleet…

Just… …Just…    …mad. Check out this link for more: http://www.spartangames.co.uk/blog

Up there in the sky….

Darkening Skies

Another new render from Spartan for Dystopian wars. This monster looks to have a terrifying turret on it. Not looking forward to facing it and no mistake…  Nice model though.

The Covenant of Antarctica rebelled from the paths of other nations, striking out to pursue their own destiny through the application of reason and science. In the barren snowfields of Antarctica this fledgling race has built incredible weapons of war which roll forth to wage war. Machines of stunning ingenuity, the coastal waters are filled with vessels whose craftsmanship is only matched by their capacity for destruction.

The skies are blackened by shadows of monstrous size, the shadows of machines that defy gravity and reason with the same indomitable force that brings life to the nation state of Antarctica – Technology.

Covenant of Antarctica - Epicurus Class Sky Fortress (Front)
Covenant of Antarctica – Epicurus Class Sky Fortress (Front)

It is with subtle irony that the Epicurus Class Sky Fortress is named for a man devoted to attaining a state free of fear, in peace and tranquillity, when this monster sows nothing but death and mayhem. In the end that is the purpose of the Covenant, and this vessel, along with all their machines of war, is but a means to that end. The entire vessel, however, is a unique twist on the carrier concept. Instead of an open deck, the Covenant’s unmanned drone fighters are shot, rather than launched into the fray, from the monstrous turret atop this strange ship, with rows upon rows of spare drones ready to be fed into the barrel. But this isn’t merely a launch vessel, its broadsides and turrets will make quick work of the enemy, and in the event that is not enough, there are plenty of spare drones ready for an all too short flight, their propulsion systems and volatile fuel making for an effective warhead.

Designing this beast was quite a task, all the other sky fortresses took different directions to what a flying carrier should be, making one for the already radically different Covenant of Antarctica took a special kind of difference. The two flyers the Covenant already have evolved nicely in design going from something more ship shape to something more abstract. The Sky Fortress took a page from the crab walker in style with its main turrets under-slung to give room for the massive lunch turret. It was a lot of fun and a tricky task to make this monster into what it is today but anything that had a turret that shoots fighters was going to be an opportunity to relish.
